Drug Driving – new driving offence from March 2015

The present Government has proposed a zero tolerance approach to to deal with those that drive under the influence of illegal drugs.

The new motoring offence will be an offence of driving with specified controlled drugs in the body – with specified limits for each particular prescribed drug and a zero tolerance approach to illegal drugs such as Cannabis, Ecstasy, Cocaine, Ketamine and Diamorphine. There are other named drugs which will be dealt with under the zero tolerance policy.

Drivers who use prescription drugs should be vigilant and check the position with their General Practitioner regarding the use of any prescribed medication and the ability to drive. There will specified limits introduced for certain prescribed drugs.

The consequences of driving whilst under the influence of drugs will result in a mandatory disqualification from driving. Watch this space for more information on the new drug driving offences.
